Professor Fabio Santanelli di Pompeo was born in Naples and currently practices in Rome, Italy. Since 2001 he holds the Chair of Plastic Surgery at University Sapienza of Rome, where he runs the university programme for the Board in Plastic Surgery, and from 2003 is Head of Plastic Surgery Department at Sant Andrea University Hospital in Rome.
As part of his training, he spent 4 years in Göteborg, Sweden, under the guidance of Professors Bengt Johanson and Hans Holmström. Here he achieved Fellowships in cleft lip and palate, craniofacial, breast, and reconstructive microsurgery. Since then, his main interest has been reconstructive microsurgery, with a special focus on breast reconstruction with DIEP flap and Latissimus Dorsi flap procedures. The intense activity in this field led to the creation of the University Master Course on Breast Reconstruction, that Professor Santanelli di Pompeo is Chief of since 2007 at the School of Medicine and Psychology of Sapienza University of Rome. Since 2009 he has also been Chief of the Fellowship of Experimental laboratory for vascular and nerves microsurgery at the Department of Biosciences, Tecnopolo, in Rome.
Over the last few years, he has been focusing on the study of breast implant-associated ALCL cases, in cooperation with the Italian Ministry of Health. The commitment and contribution to the scientific research in plastic surgery brought national and international recognition, with the consequent appointment as Secretary General of the European Association of Plastic Surgeons (EURAPS), since May 2014.
