Florian Fitzal started his carrier at the Department of General Surgery Medical University Vienna in 1999. Between 2013 and 2016 he was Head of the Breast Health Center, Sisters of Mercy, in Linz Austria and held the position of the Chief of Breast Surgery at the Department of General Surgery, Medical University Vienna from 2016 until 2023. In February 2024 he started his new position as the Chief of Breast Reconstruction in the Hanusch Hospital in Vienna.

He is an international known expert for oncoplastic surgery and breast cancer surgery. He published more than 150 articles with an h-Index of 24 (Web of Science 01/2023) and he is principle as well as co-investigator of several prospective clinical trials. Together with his friend Peter Schrenk he published two educational books for oncoplastic surgery which are registered for the European Board of Surgeons Exam UEMS.

As a co-founder of the Oncoplastic Breast Consortium (OPBC) his current scientific goal is to increase clinical trials in oncoplastic surgery, one main interest is prepectoral reconstruction. In 2025 he founded the International Breast Cancer Academy, a breast cancer online learning platform for medical students, residents and fellows under www.breastfellow.com.
